The International Guarantee Fund (FIG) is a non-profit guarantee cooperative based in Geneva. It was founded in 1996 by European, African and South American organizations.
The FIG’s mission is to help agricultural cooperatives and micro-finance institutions in the developing countries to obtain loans from local banks.
By backing up these organizations with bank guarantees, the FIG makes the resources of local banks available to finance the activities of craftsmen, merchants, and small producers who are excluded from the bank system, giving them a chance to develop their businesses and improve their living conditions.
The FIG acts as a bridge between the entrepreneurs at the bottom of the system and the local financial sector, thus playing an important role in furthering economic development.
