Events

12/01/08: Recent Events in Mumbai. ACCION is shocked and saddened by the recent tragedy in Mumbai, and by the senseless loss of life that has resulted.  The events hit home particularly for us, as Mumbai serves as one of the more important locations of our microfinance work in India.  Although ACCION is headquartered in Bangalore, we provide technical assistance to two Mumbai-based partners, Swadhaar FinServe and YES SAMPANN.  We are thankful to report that no ACCION, Swadhaar or YES SAMPANN staff, nor their clients, were harmed in last week’s attacks, although we note with sadness and regret the death of Ashok Kapur, YES BANK chairman, at the hands of the terrorists.  We will keep you informed of related developments as appropriate.

11/19/08: María Otero, ACCION President and CEO, to the President Elect: End the Credit Squeeze on Latin America’s Poor. In a memo to the U.S. president elect Barack Obama published in the November 6th issue of America’s Quarterly, María Otero urges him to take steps to increase wealth and reduce income inequality in Latin America. Failure to do so, she warns, “undermines support for democracy.” Read the full memo

10/30/08:  ACCION has launched its new hub office and training center in Accra, Ghana, underscoring our commitment to expanding financial services for Africa’s working poor. "Today marks a bold, new phase for ACCION’s work in building inclusive financial systems,” said María Otero, president and CEO of ACCION.  The new center’s staff will provide support to ACCION’s team of African microfinance experts, who currently work with microfinance institutions in both East and West Africa. To learn more about how ACCION is supporting commerically viable microfinance – and a future without poverty – in Africa click here
